dental fun

Now playing in iTunes: Is This All, Jonatha Brooke.

Had a dentist appointment this morning…

Rinse, please.

It was actually pretty uneventful, although I need to go back and have an old filling refurbished. Dang… My dentist is the son of the dentist I went to when I was a kid. So this morning he’s looking at the old filling that needs to come out and get re-filled, and he’s actually getting wistful at what a beautiful job his dad did on it, and what a shame it is that he has to yank it out and re-do it. Gets a little creepy at times. This guy also punches me in the shoulder when he sees me, exactly like his dad used to do when I was a kid. Sometimes I feel like asking for a little hit of novocaine in that shoulder while he’s at it.

Yesterday’s Junior Rose Parade was great — a beautiful day for it, and Ian seemed to play well and held up through the whole long march. I snagged some video footage, but I fear it may be pretty lackluster because Ian was in the middle of a huge group of kids, and they were moving pretty fast. Ah well…

Had a fascinating e-mail exchange with Louis Pain today. Louis is the local Hammond B-3 master who was in Paul deLay’s band for years, and who now plays with Mel Brown’s group, with the Original Cats, and recently started fronting a group with Sweet Baby James Benton. I’ve had one B-3 lesson with him, and would love to do more. He’s recently had an intriguing idea: for those unfortunates who may never be able to afford (or at least justify the purchase of) a real live Hammond B-3, he would deliver one of his “extra” B-3s to a person’s house, give a lesson, and then leave the organ there for a month for the happy Hammond enthusiast to enjoy. Then at the end of the month he’d come pick it up…all for a very reasonable fee. I won’t say more at this point because Louis isn’t even sure he’s actually going to do it. But if and when he does, I plan to be way at the head of the line.

See you tomorrow.
